The Brodhead-Juda wrestling program will have a representative at the 2017 WIAA State Wrestling meet. The Cardinals had five wrestlers participate in the WIAA Division 2 Richland Center sectional last Saturday.

Brodhead-Juda sophomore Russell Waeffler went 0-1 in the 113-pound weight class.  Westfield Area’s Daniel Nelson secured a pin against Waeffler 1:47 into the quarterfinal match. Waeffler ended the season at 26-17.

“It’s something to shoot for next year and just making it to sectionals is quite an honor. He took some steps forward this year, and hopefully, he can build on it for next year,” coach Bill Davis said.

In the 132-pound weight class, Brodhead-Juda sophomore Jackson Hauri wrestled to a  3-1 record and placed second to punch his ticket to state. This will mark Hauri’s second straight trip to the grandest stage. Hauri went to state last year as a Parkview Viking and went 2-2 and placed fifth in the 106-pound weight class. Hauri beat Prairie Du Chien-Wauzeka-Steuben’s Traeton Saint by decision 7-2 in the semifinal clash. Hauri took Saint down and turned him to take a 5-0 lead, which he never relinquished. Hauri fell in the championship match as River Valley’s Zach Licht beat Hauri by technical fall, 15-0.  With Hauri’s semifinal win over Saint, he automatically earned second when the two met in the second-place matchup. Hauri’s season record improved to a remarkable 36-4.
