Barbara Jean (Elam) Bishop, age 63, passed away July 2, 2021, at home surrounded by her loving family, which was just the way she wanted.

Barb was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Virginia (Pickett Elam) Hurt and Allen Elam. Barbara was happily married to Harry (Butch) Bishop for 40 years. She lived her early years in Indiana and was known for being a hard worker and a giving soul. She provided comfort, love and generosity to anyone with whom she came in contact.

In 1994, they moved to Brodhead, Wisconsin. Things that gave her joy were spending time with children, grandchildren and anyone who showed up at her house.  Bowling and volunteering with the church were some of her favorite pastimes, as well as caring for small children she baby-sat. She tended to leave a lasting impression on all she encountered.

When she was able to work, she gravitated toward occupations that allowed her to interact and help others.  Medically, she defied all odds and whenever she was told she wouldn’t be able to overcome things, her typical response was, “Watch me.”  She was independent, strong, stubborn and a fighter until the very end.

Barbara is survived by her mother, Virginia Hurt; sisters, Patricia Manuel of Camby, Indiana, and Karen (Rick) Stryhn of Beloit, Wisconsin. Her children included Gary (Genesis) Bishop of Brodhead, Jennifer Bishop of Brodhead, Carl Bishop of Indianapolis, Steven (Christina) Bishop of Indianapolis, Brad Bishop of Arlington, Indiana, and Brian (Ally) Bishop of Columbus, Indiana.  Also, she has 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, Butch, and her grandson, Carter.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 9, at DL Newcomer Funeral Home in Brodhead, with the Rev. Peder Johansen officiating.  A visitation will be open to any wishing to attend from noon to 3 p.m. Friday. Burial will conclude at the Greenwood Cemetery.
