Cardinals fall in final seconds of lightning-delayed contest against Big Foot
By Derek Hoesly, Correspondent
In a bizarre high school football opener, the Big Foot Chiefs stunned the Brodhead-Juda Cardinals, 28-27. The game went right down to the final seconds last Saturday, Aug. 20.
Brodhead-Juda displayed all of their offensive weapons on the opening drive. On third and four from their 34-yard line, senior quarterback Matt Schmitt scampered for three yards. Coach Jim Matthys then decided to take a gamble, and it paid off. Brodhead-Juda lined up to punt, but Schmitt received the snap and rushed for two-yards to give Brodhead-Juda the quick momentum. Schmitt connected with junior Parker Johnson for a key 12-yard gain. Senior Jack Speckman had a 10-yard run through the right side down to the Chiefs’ nine-yard line. Speckman punched it in from the two-yard line on third and goal to put the Cardinals up 7-0.
