Clinton Cougars Bow Out after Fabulous Season
Coming into Friday night’s game, the Clinton Cougars knew they had to play like they never had before. Each week of the playoffs had proved to be any chance to rise and face adversity. Friday night’s contest was not any different. The Cougars faced a Cedar Grove-Belgium team that came in with their own state ranked offensive weapons and it showed. Cedar Grove-Belgium would take the early lead, but as we’ve seen most of this playoff run, the Cougars rallied.
The entire contest was a game of back and forth scoring. At the half, the Cougars were deadlocked with Cedar Grove-Belgium at 14-14. To start off the second half, the scoring trend was more of the same, Cedar Grove-Belgium would score, and the Cougars would rally to score. This time the score came from a great kick return for a touchdown from the speedy Jordan Jones. The game was ultimately decided on by which team could keep up on converting all downs.
The Cougars would face a critical fourth and two plays and came up short, which allowed for the Cedar Grove-Belgium’s offense to march down the field and score. Late in the fourth quarter, with the Cougars marching and down by two scores, the Cougars took to the air from an unlikely source. Halsted pitches to Jones, who then pitches to Pope, who then sees the fleeting Jones down the sideline. Just as Pope throws he gets hit, but no matter, the “storybook” style play worked for a touchdown, bringing the Cougars within one score. With time winding down, the Cougars would have to rely on Cedar Grove-Belgium’s special teams making a mistake on the pending on-side kick. That didn’t happen and the Cougars faced their second loss of the season, loosing 42-35. The Clinton Cougar Football Team has had a spectacular season and are WIAA Division Five State Semi-Final runners up.
