Frederick Mohns, 74, of South Wayne, Wisconsin, quietly passed away, with family at his bedside, on Saturday, December 23, 2023. Fred was born in Juda, Wisconsin on February 3, 1949, the son of Samuel and Jeannine (Conway) Mohns. He graduated from Juda High School in 1967, the same year an airplane crashed into the hotel his senior class was staying at in New Orleans. Fred received the Governor’s Medal for Lifesaving due to his actions in saving classmates, chaperones, and strangers from this tragic fire. Fred farmed with his father and brother, Ken, in the Black River Falls, WI area for many years. It was during this time in his life Fred met his longtime friend, Dennis Hammes, a neighbor he often referred to as ‘my brother-from-another-mother’. Fred enjoyed his second career as a self-employed truck driver and drove for over 30 years on the road. He often transported military equipment and vehicles across the United States and loved to share these specialty loads with his nephews, niece, and grandchildren. Additionally, he was always willing to assist family and friends with building projects, equipment repair, and relocation needs. Fred was a great storyteller and delighted in telling stories of his travels and the many adventures he experienced. Fred was very proud of his three sons and their many accomplishments. He is survived by his sons, William (Teresa) Mohns, James (Stephanie) Mohns, Steven (Bri) Mohns, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Fred is also survived by his long-time companion Kristine Atkinson and sisters, Beverly (James) Lawrence and Christine (Robert) Wilson; Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Jeannine (Conway) Mohns; and brother Kenneth Mohns. A Celebration of Life is being planned for Fred to be held in June 2024.
