James Arlan Combs, 85, died  peacefully on Dec. 3, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Janesville while surrounded by family.

He was born on Jan. 7, 1936 in Kentucky to the late Roscoe and Eva (Feltner) Combs.

He married Linda Klapp in Durand, Illinois on Feb. 9, 1957.

He worked for many years within the cheesemaking industry and worked more than 31 years at the Goldenrod Cheese Group (later Universal Foods) in downtown Brodhead.

He enjoyed gardening, hanging his Christmas lights, hunting and running his coon dogs and was an avid Kentucky Wildcats Basketball fan. Most of all, James enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; three children, Katherine (David) Manning, Susan Ballweg and Ricky (Tammy) Combs; four grandchildren, Amber (Sean) Downing, Tori (Brian) Welch, Erin (Ryan) Wescott and Jaime (Kyle) Pierce; eight great grandchildren, Phoebey, Ritchie, Zoe, EvaLynn, Jade, Timber, Opal and Bindi “Bingo”; five siblings, Elmer Ray (Zella) Combs, W. Eugene (Jean) Combs, Wilburn (Angie) Combs, Mac Combs and Sue Combs and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was further preceded in death by one sister, Lois Mae Combs and one grandson, Jesse Redell in 2020.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family in his memory.

Funeral services will be held at the DL Newcomer Funeral Home in Brodhead on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021 at noon.

A visitation will also be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Burial will conclude at the Avon Township Cemetery.
