Janesville man shot, killed while turkey hunting
TOWN OF JOHNSTOWN – On Sunday, April 17 at 7 :37 a.m., Deputies and Detectives from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a male with a gunshot wound in a field near N. Lima Center Road/E. CTH A in the Town of Johnstown.
Fire and EMS personnel from the City of Milton also responded along with MD-1, a first response medical doctor with Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville.
Initial responding deputies located the victim, a 37-year-old Janesville man, and took over CPR from his family members, whom he had been turkey hunting with. EMS personnel and MD-1 took over lifesaving efforts but were unsuccessful.
The initial investigation shows the victim was hunting with two other subjects when he left the blind to retrieve a wounded turkey.
The victim inadvertenly ran into the field of fire of another member of his hunting party who was attempting to put a kill shot on the bird and was struck in the back.
The victim was pronounced dead on scene and turned over to the Rock County Medical Examiner pending an autopsy on 04/18/16 in Madison, Wis.
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office Reconstruction Team responded to reconstruct the incident, which appears to be an unfortunate hunting accident.
A Game Warden from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources assisted with the investigation, which is ongoing at this time.
