Mass casualty simulation provides real-world practice
By Siara Schwartzlow, EDITOR
First responders from Green and Rock Counties participated in a full-scale mass casualty simulation at the Brodhead Airport last Wednesday, June 29. In preparation for the upcoming Fly In, the simulation followed a scenario in which two airplanes collided in midair, and one landed in a crowd of spectators.
The event began with Kevin Wernet of Wisconsin Emergency Management briefing volunteer “victims” on what to expect. The victims, made to look injured or even deceased with makeup and props, were told to follow instruction cards worn around their necks. These cards provided descriptions as to how the victims should behave, whether they should speak, and the severity of their injuries.
