When the COVID-19 pandemic closed schools in the spring of 2020, Parkside Elementary School second-graders couldn’t distribute May baskets around their Monroe neighborhoods as they usually would.

Instead, their teachers, Kelly Knox and Toni Wellman, brought bags with assorted treats — from paper flowers and balloons to candy and crossword puzzles — to them. The two went door-to-door, giving socially distanced air hugs and catching up with kids they hadn’t seen in person in weeks.
