New exhibit marks Brodhead’s 125th year as a city

The former Village of Brodhead became the “City of Brodhead” through an act of the Wisconsin Legislature in its winter session of early 1891.  In those days, it was the only way for a village in this state to become a city.

The Honorable Henry Clay Putnam introduced in the Wisconsin Assembly “An Act to Incorporate the City of Brodhead.” It was passed and went on to the state Senate, where it also was passed.  It then went to Governor George W. Peck to be signed.  After its publication in the state’s official newspaper in Madison on April 22, 1891, Putnam was able to announce to Brodhead, his hometown, that it was officially a city.
