Dozens filled Brodhead Council Chambers last week to speak during the public hearing on the proposed 2022 budget about the most contentious issue – the proposal to save $83,000 by cutting a vacant, full-time patrol officer position.

During the lengthy hearing Nov. 15, citizens and police officials cautioned the Council that eliminating the position could have a detrimental effect on the safety and outreach of the community.

Police Chief Chris Hughes explained that the position has remained vacant over the past year only because of the high standards the department has in place for having officers join its team. There have been a number of candidates, but Brodhead should have the best, he said.
