Richard “Dick” Cowan died peacefully Saturday, May 18, surrounded by family. He passed with a saving faith in Jesus Christ. Dick was born in Beloit, WI July 8, 1944 to Leslie J. Cowan and Myrtle O. (Smestad) Cowan, and grew up in Brodhead, WI. Dick graduated Brodhead High School in 1962 and joined the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged in Sept. 1966. Dick married Sharon Williams of Juda, WI August 16,1964. He had a few jobs before welding for 34 years, for Knight Manufacturing. Dick’s favorite past time was his second job working for Sherri’s Dad and Mom on the family farm. He also loved serving as floor manager at the Blue Star Roller Rink owned by Sherri’s parents. Dick could fix most anything and loved helping family and friends. Always helping mow lawn and shoveling snow. Family was always first and thinking of himself last. He was never a complainer about his own health. He greeted everyone with a handshake and a smile.
Dick enjoyed his daily scripture reading and prayer time with his wife. He helped brighten the room with his humor and will be missed, already is by family and friends. He loved roller skating, dancing with Sherri and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed farming with John Deeres, riding his BMW motorcycle, loved listening to music and playing accordion, harmonica and electric organ.
Dick is survived by his wife of 59 years Sherri Cowan;children, Kelli (Robert) Wellnitz, Traci (Rodney) Wenger, Corina Rogers, Justin (Cheri) Cowan; grandchildren, Austin, Allison, Sydney, Nicholas, Abigail, Danielle, Bethany, Gabriella, Jonah, Jayden, in law: Megan, Michael; great grandchild, Jaxon, Charlotte; Brothers, Ronald (Pam), Bruce (Sue); sister-in-law Laurie Williams; brother-in-law Shane Williams; Aunt Judy and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Doreen Williams.
A visitation will be held at the DL Newcomer Funeral Home in Brodhead on Thursday May 23, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 24, 2024 at the funeral home at 12:00 PM with a visitation prior from 11:00 AM until the time of services. Burial with military honors will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery.
