Students practice orienteering at Magnolia Bluff

On Friday, Oct. 7, seventh-grade students at Brodhead Middle School took part in a unique experience at Magnolia Bluff. This curriculum-based field trip started back in the traditional classroom with instruction on topographic maps and the sport of orienteering. Then, with compasses and maps in hand, 87 students and seven staff members made the trek to Magnolia Bluff for a day of outdoor physical fitness, fun, and instruction.

When we arrived at the bluff at 9 a.m., seventh-grade students were given specific instructions from Madison native Kevin Teschendorf, a nationally-ranked orienteering competitor. Then, the challenge was to navigate a course through the brush, woods, and hillsides to a number of control checkpoints.
