Timothy R. “Papa” Smith, age 63, of Brodhead, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2021 peacefully at his home, following a battle with cancer, and surrounded by family.

He was born on July 7, 1958, in Monroe to Bernard and Velda (Wahl) Smith. He graduated from Brodhead High School in 1976.

After graduation, he married his wife of 43 years, Kathy and had two daughters, Emily (Cody) Gordon and Lindsey (Garret) Riese.

Tim was a proud papa of five beautiful grandchildren, Carter and Grace Gordon, Cecilia Nola, and Theo Riese.

He is also survived by a brother, Todd Smith, a brother in law, Tom (Ann) Richmond, a sister in law, Anne (Mike) Johnson and many nieces, nephews, friends and family.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, mother in law Anna Richmond, brother in law, Michael Richmond, and sister in law, Judy Smith.

Tim had many hobbies including hunting on “The Farm,” Thursday night bowling league, slow-pitch, annual fishing “trips”, and chats at the garage after a long day at work.

He was employed by Knight Manufacturing and in later years, McClaren Machine & Tool, where he retired in 2020.

In retirement, Tim used his time and talents to always help a neighbor, daughter, or family with their home improvement projects and he preferred to “settle up” with a cocktail or hand shake over a dollar.  He also purchased a 1969 Dodge Coronet R/T to restore and cruise with friends.

His greatest love was chasing his grandchildren around to their sporting events, assembling complex toys, and just simply being “Papa.”

Private family services were held Nov. 5 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Footville with Father Lawrence Oparaj officiating.

Everson Funeral Home assisted the family.

The family wishes to thank the Mercy Hospice Care staff for all their help and support.
