Women in STEM

Turtle Tek presents event for second year

Turtle Tek, a FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team made up of homeschooled and public high school students from Beloit and Clinton, Wis., as well as Poplar Grove, South Beloit, and Winnebago, Ill., is thrilled to announce the upcoming Second Annual Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) event for girls in sixth through 12th grade.

The event, aimed at fostering interest and enthusiasm in STEM employment fields among girls, will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3 at the Beloit Public Library, located at 605 Eclipse Boulevard in Beloit.

The team has planned an engaging and informative event featuring speakers from various sectors of STEM and hands-on activities such as a Rube Goldberg Machine, Coffee Filter Chromatography, and Walk-through of a medical case.

With a strong commitment to promoting inclusion in STEM, Turtle Tek seeks to inspire girls to explore career opportunities available in these fields.

Attendees will have the unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the experiences and journeys of successful women professionals in science, technology, engineering, and math.

The event is sponsored by Fairbanks Morse Defense.  The seven speakers for the event include, to name a couple: Bea Splinter, who works in IT; Christina Bailey, an analytical scientist; and Dr. Brittney Carson, who is a Veterinarian professor. Each speaker will share insights into their respective fields and will help facilitate hands-on activities showcasing the direct application of STEM jobs.

Turtle Tek hopes that girls discover a new passion for STEM at the event.

A meal and a swag bag will be provided to participants.
